"Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10
As a healthcare professional, I used to think I needed more hours in the day. If I could just wake up earlier, get more organized, drink more coffee, read another productivity book — maybe then I would finally feel less overwhelmed.
But after years of working long shifts, caring for patients, managing a family, and trying to be everything to everyone, I realized something surprising. The problem was not that I needed more time. The problem was how I was starting my time.
For years, my mornings began exactly the same way. My alarm would ring. Before my feet touched the floor, I was already checking emails, hospital messages, schedules, news, and social media. By the time I walked into work, my heart already felt heavy. I was reacting to everyone else's priorities before I had even acknowledged God's presence.
The Shift That Changed Everything
One Sunday evening, I made a decision. I was not going to create an hour-long morning routine. I was not going to chase perfection. I simply decided to give God the first five minutes of every morning.
Five quiet minutes. No phone. No emails. No social media. Just a cup of coffee, my Bible, a prayer, and a grateful heart.
At first, it did not seem like much. But over time, those five minutes became the foundation for every day that followed.
What Changed?
The interesting part is — my life did not suddenly become easier. The operating rooms were still busy. Patients were still anxious. Schedules still changed unexpectedly. My children still needed me. Laundry still piled up. Life remained full.
But I changed. Instead of starting each day overwhelmed, I started with peace. Instead of reacting to every inconvenience, I responded with patience. Instead of carrying anxiety into every room, I carried a quieter confidence. Not because I had all the answers — but because I had already spent time with the One who does.
Your Five-Minute Sunday Reset
You do not need expensive planners. You do not need a complicated routine. You simply need to begin with intention. Here is the routine that has helped me.
1. Pray for Wisdom and Strength
Before asking God to change your circumstances, ask Him to change your heart. Pray for wisdom, patience, kindness, and strength. Ask Him to help you serve others well while also caring for yourself and your family. Remember that God is not surprised by the week ahead — He already knows every challenge you will face.
2. Read One Passage of Scripture
You do not have to read several chapters. One passage can be enough. One verse can stay with you all day. Some favorites: Isaiah 41:10 — "Fear not, for I am with you." Joshua 1:9 — "Be strong and courageous." Philippians 4:6–7 — "Do not be anxious about anything." Allow God's Word to become louder than your worries.
3. Write Three Things You're Thankful For
Gratitude shifts your focus. Instead of dwelling on what is missing, you begin noticing what has already been given. Your list does not have to be complicated. Today I am thankful for my family, another opportunity to care for patients, and God's faithfulness. Simple gratitude changes perspective.
4. Review Your Week With Intention
Open your planner. Look at your schedule. Instead of asking "How am I going to survive this?" ask "How can I honor God in each opportunity He has given me?" Identify appointments, family time, rest, exercise, church, and meals. Build your week intentionally instead of reacting to it.
5. Choose One Person to Encourage
One encouraging text. One phone call. One prayer. One compliment. One act of kindness. Small acts of encouragement often become the brightest part of someone else's week.
Why This Works
Beginning your week with God does not guarantee an easy week. It prepares your heart for whatever comes. Instead of letting stress become your first companion, you invite God's peace to walk with you. Instead of allowing fear to speak first, you begin by listening to truth.
The circumstances around you may stay the same. But your response can become completely different.
Survive · Thrive · Live
SURVIVE — Do not begin your week carrying last week's stress. Lay your worries before God. Allow Him to carry what you were never meant to carry alone.
THRIVE — Build one simple habit. Five intentional minutes every morning. Prayer. Scripture. Gratitude. Purpose. Repeat. Consistency matters more than perfection.
LIVE — Imagine beginning each Monday with peace instead of panic. Imagine walking into work feeling grounded instead of overwhelmed. Imagine having more patience with your spouse, more joy with your children, more compassion for your patients, and more grace for yourself. That is what happens when your heart is filled before your schedule becomes full.
Today's Thrive Challenge
Tomorrow morning — before checking your phone, before opening your emails, before scrolling social media, before worrying about work — spend just five minutes with God. Pray. Read one Bible passage. Write down three blessings. Then carry His peace into the rest of your day. One small shift today can change your entire week.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start a morning routine as a shift worker?
Start small. You do not need an hour — five intentional minutes before checking your phone is enough to change the tone of your entire day. Begin with one habit: prayer, a single Bible verse, or writing three things you are grateful for. Build from there as it becomes natural.
What is a Sunday reset routine?
A Sunday reset is a short intentional practice at the start of your week — usually 5 to 30 minutes — where you prepare your heart, mind, and schedule for the days ahead. It might include prayer, reviewing your calendar, setting one goal, and identifying someone to encourage. The goal is to begin the week with intention rather than reaction.
How can faith help with burnout in healthcare?
Faith provides a foundation that does not shift with circumstances. When the work is hard, patients are suffering, and you feel depleted, having a daily practice of prayer and Scripture gives you something stable to return to. Many healthcare professionals find that starting the day with God — even briefly — helps them carry less anxiety and respond with more patience throughout their shift.
What Bible verses help with work stress?
Several passages speak directly to the pressures healthcare workers face. Philippians 4:6-7 addresses anxiety: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Isaiah 41:10 offers strength: "Fear not, for I am with you." Matthew 11:28 offers rest: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
