Full disclosure

Many nurses entered the profession because of a sense of calling — a belief that caring for others is meaningful work. But sustained exposure to suffering, death, and systemic dysfunction can erode that sense of purpose over time. Faith — in whatever form it takes for you — can be a powerful anchor.

Small practices, sustained over time

Grand spiritual gestures are hard to maintain on a shift schedule. What works is small, consistent practice: a prayer before you clock in, a moment of gratitude at the end of a shift, a community you return to on your days off.

  • A brief centering practice before each shift — even 60 seconds
  • A gratitude note at the end of each workday — one thing, specific
  • Community connection on your days off — church, small group, or spiritual friends
  • Journaling through the hard cases — processing grief is a spiritual practice
  • Permission to lament — faith doesn't require pretending everything is fine
